Embattled Nollywood actor Olarenwaju James popularly known as Baba Ijesha has been denied his quest for bail in the ongoing trial over alleged sexual assault of a minor in a Lagos State magistrate court.

GreenWhiteGreen GWG reports that the Yoruba movie star was arrested and detained by the Lagos state police after he was reportedly caught molesting the minor who was in the care of celebrated Lagos comedienne, Princess.

He was earlier granted bail on May 17 in the course of a special decongestion exercise after he had spent 25 days in custody, but was apparently unable to meet the terms of the bail.

As the trial resumed on Wednesday following the resumption of the courts, his lawyer, Kayode Olabiran, cited the defendant’s failing health as a reason for bail.

According to him sureties were scared of the likely consequences and had failed to help secure bail for the accused.

But in his ruling, the judge, P. E Nwaka, held that the court could not grant Baba Ijesha bail because the matter is beyond its jurisdiction, as the case has already been filed before the high court.

Yetunde Cardoso, a Superintendent of Police who is the prosecutor in charge of the case, said the matter is now beyond the police.

She said, “Mr Olanrewaju was actually granted bail during the JUSUN strike and based on the conditions given, he couldn’t meet them, and he was properly charged today (Wednesday).

“Just like the court stated, the case has already been filed before the high court, and the Directorate of Public Prosecution (DPP) of Lagos State Ministry of Justice has taken over the matter from the police.

“So presently, we have handed over to the DPP, so the case is before them (DPP). It has nothing to do with the police anymore. It’s now left for the DPP to handle it.”
