There was pandemonium at the main campus of the Delta State Polytechnic, Ogwashi-Uku, in Aniocha South Local Government Area of the state when suspected cultists stormed the school and shot a student.

The incident occurred on Tuesday at about 11:30am when students were still writing their first paper for day in the ongoing first semester examination of the polytechnic.

It was gathered that the incident temporarily halted the exercise for Higher National Diploma (HND) and National Diploma (ND) students for about an hour.

Our correspondent gathered that many of the students who were still writing their fled their examination halls for safety.

The suspected cultists, said to be numbering about ten, shot the student in front one of the halls before absconding.

The victim, whose name could not be immediately ascertained, was shot close to his chest.

The student, who is now recuperating, was later rushed to the school healthcare centre for first urgent medical attention.

He was later moved to the Ogwashi-Uku General Hospital.

The students were said to have returned to their exam halls after normalcy returned to the school premises.

Several students confirmed the incident, saying they were all in panic when the gunmen struck.

Efforts to confirm to the incident in the school from the Delta State Polytechnic, Ogwashi-Uku’s Public Relations Officer, Mr. Manford Oyibogbeye, was unsuccessful as his telephone number was said to be switched off by the network provider.

When contacted, the State Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Bright Edafe, confirmed the incident, however, saying “the student is alive receiving medical treatment.”

The development in the Delta State Polytechnic, Ogwashi-Uku is bound to raise apprehension not just among the students and stakeholders, but also among stakeholders concerned about the security situation in higher institutions.
