2021 UTME: Five (5) Things to Do If you Fail JAMB

The Joint Admission Matriculation Board (JAMB) concluded its 2021 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) a few weeks ago with results released.

In case you are one of the students that failed the Computer Based Test (CBT) conducted by JAMB, you are not alone, and you are not the first. This is not to console you, but rather the truth. There are many individuals that have experienced such and are today graduates.

According to JAMB registrar, Prof. Ishaq Oloyede, those who scored 160 and above were about 65.62 per cent, a percentage that is lower when compared with 69.82 per cent of the same statistics in 2020.

This is not the time to start blaming the computer you used while writing the exams. It is instead a time to pick yourself up and prepare for a better future. The time spent awaiting another JAMB year should not be wasted.

Here are five things you can do if you fail JAMB 2021 UTME:

Learn a skill

In case you don’t know, even those who gain admission are now learning new skills for survival. There are more graduates produced yearly than the number of jobs available. Learn a skill like web designing, hair making, jewellery making, crochets, etc, pending the time you rewrite JAMB UTME. Just go for any you are interested in. You can make some cool cash using this skill even when you gain admission and after graduation.

Get employed

Idle hands are the devil’s workshop. Get employed to get some money. Private primary schools usually employ fresh secondary school graduates. You can start saving the earned money to help reduce the burden of your next examinations and admission expenses on your parent(s).

Start a small business

In case you are entrepreneurial, you can start a small business like a tutorial class for primary school students. Being the entrepreneurial type, you should be able to come up with other business ideas. Meanwhile, discuss with your parent or guardian, as some might be scared it would dissuade you from writing another JAMB UTME. They should be able to help if they buy into your idea.

Explore your talent

Do you like singing, drumming or playing the piano; you may join a band and get paid for your service. However, we will advise you to discuss this with your parent or guardian before taking such step.

Register for a pre-degree programme

If your parent can afford it, instead of sitting at home, you can convince them to register you for a pre-degree programme. Many universities in Nigeria offer this programme. It gives you a firsthand experience of how life in a university could be and will also prepare you for the next UTME.

It is important to note that anybody promising they can help you upgrade your JAMB score are nothing but scammers as this is impossible.
