Confusion Trails Plans For APC Congress

The All Progressives Congress (APC) has accused the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) of leaking a private confidential memo notifying it of impending postponement of the earlier scheduled ward, LGA, state congresses as well as its national convention.

The ruling party in a letter with reference number APC/NHDQ/INEC/19/021/39, and addressed to the INEC chairman, Prof Mahmood Yakubu, notified the commission of the party’s intention to reschedule earlier timelines it communicated for its congresses and national convention.

The letter entitled Re- Notice for the Conduct of Congresses and signed by John James Akpanudedehe reads in part:

“We refer to our letter PC/NHDQ/INEC/19/021/20 dated 10th June 2021 on the above subject and wish to inform the commission that the party has rescheduled its congresses and national convention to a later date, which will be communicated to you.

“This serves as formal notification pursuant to the provisions of section 85 of the electoral Act (2010), as amended”.

However, the notification found its way into the public domain with the commission accusing INEC of deliberately leaking the memo.

Senator Akpanudedehe, in a swift response however declared that the letter in circulation does not suggest postponement of the scheduled Congresses, and wondered how it leaked from the Independent National Electoral Commission but a notification of possible postponement.

“The above document in circulation does not intend a postponement of the Congresses. How it leaked from INEC is strange.

“It is to cure the legal land mine occasioned by Section 85 of the Electoral Act on the issuance of 21 DAYS NOTICE TO INEC, bearing in mind that the earlier date we released was not sacrosanct”.
