Pilots Escape As Bandits Shoot Down Air Force Jet
A Nigerian Air Force (NAF) Alpha Jet aircraft pilot has been successfully rescued after his plane was shot down by bandits on Sunday.
The Nigerian Air Force confirmed the development in a statement on Monday.
GreenWhiteGreen GWG had on Sunday reported that a military air plane was missing based on information from military and other sources, but the Air Force debunked the report on the claim that there was no mission from Yola to Kaduna as had been reported.
Confirming the development in a statement on Monday, Nigeria Air Force spokesman, Air Commodore Edward Gabkwet, revealed that the Alpha Jet was hit on its return from an air interdiction mission between the boundaries of Zamfara and Kaduna States.
He, however, affirmed that the pilots and all other occupants were rescued. According to him, the gallant pilot of the aircraft, Flight Lieutenant Abayomi Dairo, successfully ejected from the aircraft.
On how the pilot escaped after the Nigerian Air Force jet was shot down by the bandits, he said: “Using his survival instincts, the pilot, who came under intense ground fire from the bandits, was able to evade them and sought refuge in nearby settlements awaiting sunset.”
The shooting down of an air force jet by bandits is bound to upset permutations on the balance of forces between the Nigerian military and the bandits and insurgents that they have been fighting.
