Tokyo 2020 Olympics: Germany Defeat D’Tigers 99-92

Barely 24 hours after Nigeria’s national female team, D’Tigress lost to the USA, the male national team, D’Tigers has also suffered a loss early morning of Wednesday as Germany defeated them 99-92.

Green White Green (GWG) recalls D’Tiger was defeated in their last Group B match against Australia, the favourite gold medalist contender in the competition by 84-67.

Germany had also suffered a loss against Italy, 92-82. But luck was on their side considering Nigeria’s Coach Mike Brown team were favourited to win prior to the game.

Meanwhile, D’Tigers secured the first basket via Miami Heat Point guard Gabe Vincent and accumulated most of their points via three pointers, an improvement from the performance in their first game.

They only converted just 8 of their 24 attempts from downtown against the Boomers.

The next game is scheduled for Friday, July 31. A win and some luck will see D’Tigers qualify for the quatre final, a feat that would be the first-ever achieved by an African team in the Olympics history.

In Nnamdi Gabe Vincent, Precious Achiuwa, and KZ Okpala, all players of the Miami Heat, D’Tigers Coach Mike Brown has the rare privilege of having three players from the same NBA team.

That familiarity gives D’Tigers an edge not many national teams have. It wasn’t too glaring against the vastly experienced Australians, but it was glaring in the pre-Olympic exhibition game wins over the USA and Argentina, and could prove pivotal against the Italians.

It doesn’t end there though, as D’Tigers have a total of seven players from the NBA, including the impressive Josh Okogie and Jordan Nwora who contributed 11 and 10 points respectively against the Aussies.
