2020 Olympics 100 meters Men's final

Enoch Adegoke suffered a hamstring injury midway into the 2020 Olympics 100 meters men’s final pulling down a medal hope for Nigeria in one of the most-watched events of the Olympiad.

The 100 meters finals which is arguably the star event of the Olympics was this year an open event with none of the original nine finalists favourites for the gold medal.

This became even more so after Britain’s Zharnel Hughes who had the fastest record this year in the event was disqualified after a false start.

In the restart, Adegoke who is keeping pace with the front of the pack suddenly pulled a hamstring midway into the race crying in agony as he watched his colleagues finish the race.

Marcell Jacobs came first at 9.80 seconds as he improved on the 9.84 seconds he had earlier set in the semi-finals. He pushed America’s Fred Kerley to second place with 9.84sec, while third place finisher was Andre De Grasse, of Canada. It was a second bronze for the Canadian after the bronze medal he also won at the 2016 Olympics in Rio.

Jamaica who made a clean sweep of the three medals in the 100 meters women’s race was, however, missing in the 100 meters men’s finals.

The disappointment for Nigeria follows the similar hamstring injury suffered in the 100 meters semi finals by compatriot, Usehoritse Itshekiri who also failed to finish his semi-final race.

Adegoke, who is current Nigeria champion in the event, however, qualified for the finals with a personal best of 9.98s after he displaced European champion, Zharnel Hughes to second place.

It was also the first time in 25 years that Nigeria qualified for the 100 meters Olympics Men’s finals.

GreenWhiteGreen GWG reports that Nigeria is yet to win a medal in the 2020 Olympics despite claims of adequate preparation for the competition.

The outing by Nigeria has been mired in several controversies ranging from missing kits, missing allowances for athletes among other sloppy acts.

However, several Nigerians have also been seen wearing the flags of other countries.
