The Zenith Labour Party (ZLP) has substituted its governorship candidate for the November 6 election in Anambra state with Dr Obiora Okonkwo who recently resigned his membership of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP.

Okonkwo who is from Anambra Central Senatorial District was second in the PDP primaries and had protested that the primary was rigged alleging that some votes which he insinuated could be his were missing in the final count.

A statement issued by Dr Chinedu Ekwealor, Media Director, Dr Obiora Okonkwo Campaign Organisation and made available to journalists on Sunday in Awka stated that all substitution processes with the INEC have been completed.

Okonkwo was before now a chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Anambra.

He however left PDP following what he (Okonkwo) tagged discrepancies that heralded the conduct of the June 26, 2021 governorship primary of the party in which he came second in Awka.

The substitution was completed on Friday, July 30, 2021 at the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

The submission followed Dr. Okonkwo’s resignation from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

Also submitted to INEC was the name of Mrs Jessie Balonwu, a former member of the House of Representatives and a former State Women Leader of the PDP, as running-mate to Dr. Okonkwo.

Balonwu, from Onitsha North and South Federal Constituency of Anambra North Senatorial District, was once a Commissioner for education in Anambra state.

The statement noted that. Okonkwo’s movement to ZLP followed a groundswell of pressure from political and community leaders, opinion moulders, stakeholders etc for him to leave PDP and re,-join the race on another platform.

The statement hinted that the leadership of ZLP will formally unveil Okonkwo and Balonwu to  people of Anambra state in the next few days.

The move is bound to unsettle permutations for the governorship election as Okonkwo becomes the first major candidate in the election from outside Anambra South Senatorial District.
