Breaking: Messi Leaving Barcelona
Barcelona announced on Thursday that its most famous player ever, Lionel Messi would be leaving the club despite an agreement that had been worked out between the club and the player.
GreenWhiteGreen GWG reports that the six-time Ballon d’Or winner, Lionel Messi officially became a free agent when his contract expired at the beginning of July.
However, Barcelona and agents of Lionel Messi were behind the doors working out an agreement that would have stopped him leaving.
That agreement it was gathered had sailed through but structural issues appeared to have disrupted the consummation of the new agreement that would have seen the player accept a cut down in his wages.
The club cited structural obstacles beyond it for the failure to consummate the new agreement. Barcelona cited La Liga regulations which it, however, did not specify as the reason Messi would be leaving the club.
The club in a statement on its website said:
Despite FC Barcelona and Lionel Messi having reached an agreement and the clear intention of both parties to sign a new contract today, this cannot happen because of financial and structural obstacles (Spanish Liga regulations).
As a result of this situation, Messi shall not be staying on at FC Barcelona. Both parties deeply regret that the wishes of the player and the club will ultimately not be fulfilled.
FC Barcelona wholeheartedly expresses its gratitude to the player for his contribution to the aggrandisement of the club and wishes him all the very best for the future in his personal and professional life.
The 34-year-old Argentina international’s Barcelona contract expired on June 30, amid speculation of him leaving Camp Nou which Messi has called home since 2000.
Barcelona have spent the past 18 months attempting to trim their wage bill, having been significantly impacted financially by the COVID-19 pandemic,.
Messi’s previous contract, signed in 2017, was worth approximately 593 million dollars over four years.
The Argentine has won 10 La Liga and four Champions League titles during his time at FC Barcelona.
They have not won the domestic league since 2019 and the continental crown since 2015.
The news of Messi leaving Barcelona is bound to excite rival teams in Europe that have been on the lookout for his talents.
