Renowned sports wears manufacturing giant, Puma, has formally announced the cancellation of sponsorship contract with the Athletics Federation of Nigeria.

The German company disclosed this in a statement issued on Wednesday evening and addressed to the Athletics Federation of Nigeria.

According to the statement, termination of the contract was not unconnected to the controversy that has dogged the Team Nigeria camp and the country’s sport administrators in the ongoing Olympics in Tokyo.

“We are referring to the Sponsoring & Licensing Agreement (the “Agreement”) signed between our Company and your Federation.

“As a direct consequence of the recent developments, particularly at the Tokyo Olympic Games 2020, and pursuant to Clauses 9.2 and 7.3 of the Agreement, we hereby terminate the Agreement with immediate effect,” the statement reads in part.

The cancellation by Puma is sequel to the the disgraceful imbroglio occasioned by the $2.7 millon kits sponsorship deal with Nigeria which has put the AFN officials and Nigeria’s ministry of youth and sports at loggerheads.

Tokyo Olympics: Nigeria Crash Out Of 4×100 Female Event

Former President of AFN Shehu Gusau had reportedly entered into the contract with Puma at Doha in 2019, a development that led to crisis in the Atheltic Federation of Nigeria.

Before the commencement of Tokyo Olympics, the Nigeria ministry of youth and sports development had said athletes will not use Puma kits at the Olympics as the ministry is not aware of the contract with Puma.

The Ministry accused Gusau and former technical director of AFN, Sunday Adeleye, of refusing to divulge the details of the contract  they signed with Puma on behalf of AFN.
