American Felix Wins 11th Medal
11 Medals From Five Olympic Games More Than Nine Won By Nigeria
Allyson Felix became the most decorated American in Olympic athlete when she won the 11th medal, a gold, as part of a star-studded 4×400 metres team.
The 35-year-old Felix ran the second leg in a team that also boasted 400m hurdles gold medallist and world record-holder Sydney McLaughlin.
There was also 400m hurdles world champion and silver medallist Dalilah Muhammad and 800m gold medallist Athning Mu.
They clocked a super-fast three minutes 16.85 seconds to get gold ahead of European champions Poland (3:20.53) and Jamaica (3:21.24).
Felix won 400m bronze on Friday and her 11 medals are one more than Carl Lewis on the men’s side.
She has seven gold medals, three silver and one bronze.
Her personal haul of 11 medals from five Olympic Games are more than the nine that Nigeria has also hauled from the same number of games.
Nigeria got two medals from Athens, five from Beijing, none at London, one from Rio and two from Tokyo making a total of nine medals below that hauled by the single American, Felix who at 35 is apparently retiring from the Olympic Games.
Her 11 medal haul is, however, below the record 23 gold medals hauled by the greatest Olympian of all time, Michael Phelps, the American swimming champion who did not participate in the Tokyo Olympics.
The Nigerian participation in Tokyo has been dubbed the most scandalous with allegations of sleaze in the distribution of welfare for players and the international embarsment that came with sports wares company abrogating its contract with Nigeria in the midst of the games.
