Police on Monday said they arrested a man for making a dance video with a woman at a mosque in Cumilla, a city in eastern Bangladesh, the woman is on the run.

District police chief Faruk Ahmed said Yasin, aged 20, was arrested at his home in Devidwar, in Cumilla district, after the clip met outrage on social media.

Ahmed said the man was charged with hurting Muslims’ religious sentiment under the 2018 Digital Security Act.

He added that the accused has been sent to jail pending trial.

Ahmed said the video clip was shot at the Daudkandi Model Mosque, one of the 50 places of worship recently built by the government.

The video was made nearly a month ago and was posted on the Likee video sharing platform.

The mosque is located nearly 60 kilometres east of the capital, Dhaka.

The footage was viewed many times before it was removed from the platform, he said.

The woman shown in the video is on the run, he added.

If found guilty, the man will face a maximum of five years of jail or a fine of up to 1 million taka (approximately 11,700 dollars), under the law.

In 2020 a court in Bangladesh, a predominantly Muslim country, jailed two Hindu men each for seven years for social media posts deemed insulting to the Muslim Prophet Mohammed.
