on

Anger is a sword-like emotion, it permits you to speak your mind without the fear of consequences and at the same time, it may push you to do things you might later regret.

One thing you need to know is, everybody is capable of experiencing this feeling, the way we all handle it is what differs.

Charles Spielberger (PhD), a psychologist with a speciality in anger describes it “as an emotional state that varies in intensity from mild irritation to intense fury and rage”

If you are the type that is quick to anger, below are some things you can try to tame your anger:

Count Down Before Responding or Reacting

When next someone says something that infuriates you, count down to 10 before responding. Make this a habit and you will discover over time, your response would be more constructive other than your present angry utterances.

Walk Away

This may be a difficult thing to do but needed. It doesn’t mean you are subjecting yourself to the perceived disrespect, instead, you will be acting as the more matured and restricting yourself from saying unwarranted words.

Slow Your Breathing

Your pulse is likely to be fast pacing when angry. This is because your body has switched to fight mode. Take a breather, slow down your breathing. Take a deep breath and exhale like it is fun.

Have a Control Word For Your Anger

Come up with some calming words to recite whenever you are angry. It might be a mantra such as “other people do not determine how I feel”; “It is alright, just calm down”; “Control yourself”. Repeat this repeatedly to yourself when in a situation you want to blow up.
