Veteran musician Mike Okri has contracted COVID-19 despite being fully vaccinated.

Okri, who recently returned home after decades abroad, said he caught the virus on Friday, August 20, a day before he was due to travel.

He said he felt “devastated” and “funny” and had gone into self-isolation at home for 10 or 14 days.

Announcing his health status in a Facebook Live video, Okri said: “Hey folks, this is coming to me as a rude shock. I had my Covid test on Friday, hoping to fly today, Saturday and it turned out it was positive.

“I’m so devastated, which means that I can’t travel for another 10 to 14 days. As I’m speaking now, I’m self-quarantined.

“I just want to tell folks that yes, for those doubting Thomases, that the damn thing is real.

“I’m feeling funny; even though I had my vaccines, double shots, I’m still almost like, hmm, that doesn’t mean that you’re immune.

“So, folks, there are a lot of people walking around with it, but they don’t even know.”

Okri relocated to the United States in 1995.

Discussing why he left during an interview with a Nigerian media, Okri said; “I can only say that I just left because I was tired of how we do things. And frankly, I figured there was greener pasture out there. Another thing was that I was very concerned about losing ground in my kind of music. The idea that I had an idea (about the direction my music should go) and it was not possible for me to showcase it further than I had done was the reason I had to leave”.

The Nigerian Music Awards (NMA) and Fame Music Awards (FMA) winner dominated the country’s music scene in the 80s and 1990s with hits like ‘Rhumba Dance’, ‘Time Na Money’, ‘Okpeke’, and many others.
