Why Court Granted Suspected IPOB Informant, Gloria, N2m Bail

A high court sitting in the federal capital territory (FCT) has granted Gloria Okolie bail in the sum of N2 million and a level-12 officer as surety.

Gloria was arrested by the police for allegedly spying for the Eastern Security Network (ESN), a security outfit by the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) group.

The court asked the Nigerian Police Force (NPF) to charge her to court by August 31 or release her.

GWG had reported that the Deputy Force Public Relations Officer (DFPRO), Mr Aremu Adeniran, disclosed her arrest was because of her connection with the series of attacks on security formations and other critical national infrastructure in the South-East.

“Further investigations by the police revealed that the female suspect took advantage of her gender and seemingly innocuous look to carry out espionage against security personnel on behalf of IPOB/ESN.

“The suspect also serves as an intermediate person, who receives cash, drugs and weapons on behalf of IPOB/ESN and deliver same to their commanders in their camps.

“Through her clandestine criminal activities, she actively aided and abetted the multiple acts of murder, arson and malicious damage to both private and public property by the ESN,” he said.

Her detention stirred public outcry as many Nigerians, including civil society organisations, have called for her release.

On Monday, Okolie filed a fundamental human rights suit asking the court to mandate the police to pay the sum of N100 billion as “general and punitive” damages for “infringing” on her rights.

On Friday, the court ordered that she should be charged to court or be granted bail in the sum of N2 million and a level-12 officer as surety on or before August 31.

Harrison Gwamnishu, the activist who has been using his social media platforms to call for justice for Okolie, confirmed the development.
