Vice President Yemi Osinbajo was in an awkward position on Saturday after, Aisha Yesufu, a very strong critic of President Muhammadu Buhari ran to his defence following a news report that misquoted the vice-president.

GreenWhiteGreen GWG reports that Aisha Yesufu has won the reputation of one of the most formidable critics of President Buhari finding fault in his actions and policies.

Aisha Yesufu who came to renown as a Bring Back Our Girls campaigner, however, on Saturday ran to the defence of Osinbajo after he was reportedly misquoted by the The Peoples Gazette over a fake headline on Vice President Yemi Osinbajo.

Yesufu asserted that Osinbajo who spoke on the National Social Cohesion Dialogue organized by the Africa Polling Institute, which was held at the Shehu Musa Yar’Adua Centre, Abuja on Thursday was misquoted by the Peoples Gazette, an online newspaper.

The Gazette had in its report quoted Osinbajo as having said “Nothing special about Nigerians being violently killed, hungry and unemployed”.

However, the newspaper soon put out an apology.

The newspaper which updated its report put an editor’s note to the story saying “This story has been updated to reflect the accurate context of Mr Osinbajo’s full statement, which was not previously made available to The Gazette.”

Reacting, to the Gazette, Aisha Yesufu defended Vice President Osinbajo, saying that Vice President Osinbajo always knows what to say at the right time to soothe nerves.

“This cannot be an Osinbajo statement. The one thing you can give Professor Yemi Osinbajo @ProfOsinbajo credit for is knowing what to say at the right time to soothe nerve. He might not do anything to change the situation but he will say what will soothe nerves,” she wrote on her Twitter page.

The defence from Buhari’s critic may have come as a double-edged sword for Osinbajo given the fact that Aisha Yesufu defending him is also one of the most unsparing critics of President Buhari. One of the inclinations of many Nigerian politicians is to inherit the enemies of their principals.
