Senator Ibikunle Amosun and Senator Bola Tinubu

Senator Ibikunle Amosun has become the latest high-profile Southwest political leader to visit Asiwaju Bola Tinubu in London. The visit has further captivated the imagination of political stakeholders on the attention being paid to the former Lagos State governor by his estranged political associates.

GreenWhiteGreen GWG reports that several political leaders including President Muhammadu Buhari have visited the All Progressives Congress, APC national leader in the United Kingdom.

However, the visit to him by some of those known to have fallen out with him has increasingly enthralled political stakeholders.

Before Amosun, Muiz Banire, Governor Kayode Fayemi of Ekiti State, Governor Rotimi Akeredolu of Ondo State had also followed loyal associates of the APC national leader to visit Tinubu.

GreenWhiteGreen GWG reports that Banire had fallen out with Tinubu after serving three terms as a commissioner in Lagos State. Fayemi and Akeredolu are also known to have publicly fallen out with Tinubu but both men made a joint visit to Tinubu a week ago.

Fayemi who has Akeredolu’s support is believed to be the most serious potential rival to Tinubu’s 2023 presidential aspiration.

After the visit of Fayemi and Akeredolu, Amosun who is the immediate past governor of Ogun State has now become the latest senior political leader from the Southwest to visit the APC national leader.

Remarkably, Amosun and Tinubu are believed to have fought proxy political battles, the most recent being the 2019 Ogun State governorship battle where Tinubu was believed to have sided with other political leaders to frustrate Amosun’s scheme to have a protégée in the person of Adekunle Akinlade as his successor.

GreenWhiteGreen GWG reports that the rivalry between Amosun and Tinubu for clout in the Buhari presidency was brought to humour when during the president’s first term he cancelled a visit to Lagos on the claim of having an ear pain but was pictured in a convivial mood with Amosun in the Presidential Villa.

Like the previous visits of the estranged political associates of the former Lagos State governor, Amosun has not said anything on his visit to Tinubu.

GreenWhiteGreen GWG reports that Tinubu’s associates such as Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, Speaker Mudashiru Obasa and others returned to Nigeria to affirm that Tinubu was in good health. However, the estranged political associates have almost always kept mute.

Amosun has also kept mute on his visit to Tinubu, a development that may have raised troubling questions. That is besides the issue as to why those who have been at loggerheads with Tinubu in Nigeria are trooping to London to see him!

However, the absence of a walking stick in the picture of the two men would also reassure the supporters of the APC national leader that Tinubu is mending.
