Why I Decided Not To Join 2023 Presidential Race — Akeredolu

Ondo state governor, Rotimi Akeredolu, has declared he has no intention to join the 2023 presidential race and instead would prefer “to be left to focus on deepening good governance in Ondo State”.

Akeredolu was reacting to campaign posters and fliers urging him to contest the next Presidential election. These posters reportedly flooded social media with one pairing him with Mai Mala Buni.

Mai Mala Buni is the Chairman of the APC Caretaker/Extraordinary Convention Planning Committee and governor of Yobe State.

In a statement by his Chief Press Secretary, Richard Olatunde, Akeredolu distanced himself from promotional activities linking him with the 2023 Presidential election.

The statement reads: “Undoubtedly, the development is no less a needless distraction.

“Though Mr. Governor’s constitutional right, qualification and competencies are not in doubt, this particular campaign does not represent in any manner, his immediate political disposition.

“For emphasis, Governor Akeredolu who has just been re-elected wishes to be left to focus on deepening good governance in Ondo State.

“We advise all those involved to be guided just as he holds the firm view that only God can put men in position.”

GWG recalls Akeredolu and Ekiti state governor, Kayode Fayemi who are regarded as two of the most formidable political rivals of APC national leader, Ahmed Tinubu in the Southwest section of the party followed visits by other prominent Nigerians including President Muhammadu Buhari, Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, former APC national legal adviser, Muiz Banire and others to the APC leader in London.

Both governors were one time associates of Tinubu who had over the years becoming rivals.

After supporting Akeredolu for the governorship of Ondo State in 2012, Tinubu was reported to have turned against him in 2016 to no avail and against the narrative for Fayemi who as a serving minister was said to have backed Akeredolu in every way.

Again, Fayemi is believed to have a presidential ambition as against the narrative from the southwest that the cap fits Tinubu and Tinubu alone.
