The Police in Delta State have launched a probe into plans by the mother of a 14-year-old girl, to marry her off to a 48-year-old man who made her pregnant in Asaba.

The case of the girl named Kosi was brought to light by an activist Harrison Gwamnishu, who shared the story online following the determination of the parents and the groom to proceed with the wedding despite the apparent objection of the girl in the centre of the marriage scandal.

GreenWhiteGreen GWG reports that marriage of girls under the age of 18 is prohibited by the Child Rights Act as endorsed by the Delta State Government.

The mother of the pregnant girl, however, claims that the girl is from the neighbouring Anambra State though she and the girl and the 48-year-old groom are resident in Asaba, the Delta State capital.

The circumstances of the pregnancy are unclear, but the mother claims that the relationship between the girl and the man was apparently consensual.

In the video shared online of the discussion between the guardian of the girl called Nonye, her mother and the activist, the mother and the guardian are heard defending the marriage plans which is scheduled to hold at the weekend.

”We know it’s bad but go and tell her that next time she should close her legs because it is not anybody’s fault. We didn’t force her to go and marry,” the mother said in dismissal of the pleas by the Delta activist for the pregnant girl.

The guardian argued that nobody married the victim off but that she willingly agreed to marry the man who impregnated her.

”Nobody married her off. She willingly….” Nonye said

The activist said that the ladies involved have been arrested by the police but it is still unclear if the traditional marriage would be called off as the buzz in Delta over the marriage of the underaged pregnant girl spread in Asaba.

He has, however, subsequently sent out messages that his life has come under threat following his role in the matter.
