Kano Hisbah VAT war

Amid rage by some states over the disproportionate distribution of Value Added Tax, VAT proceeds to states that destroy alcoholic beverages, the Kano State Hisbah Board on Wednesday said it had confiscated two vehicles loaded with 5,760 cartons of assorted beer on Kano/Madobi road.

This was contained in a statement issued by the Public Relations Officer of the board, Lawan Ibrahim-Fagge, in Kano on Wednesday.

The statement quoted the Commander-General of the board, Dr Harun Ibn-Sina, as saying, while inspecting the vehicles at the board’s headquarters, that they were apprehended by Hisbah officials around 4:00 am. on Wednesday.

“Hisbah board has prohibited sale of beer in the state to avoid being intoxicated,” he said despite mutterings over its collection of VAT proceeds from the drinks

Ibn-Sina added that the board would continue to sustain fight against drugs and other intoxicating substances among youths in the state.

He commended the efforts of Hisbah corps, volunteers and stakeholders for their commitment, adding that the unwholesome practice among youths had been a source of concern to the society.

The commander-general said that efforts at ridding the society of the menace of drugs and other intoxicants would be sustained.

GreenWhiteGreen GWG reports that Governor Nyesom Wike had queried the disproportionate distribution of VAT proceeds after it came to light that his state in June got N4.7 billion out of the N15.1 billion representing 31%, while Lagos which generated N46.4 billion got 20% of its VAT proceeds while Kano which generated N2.8 billion got all N2.8 billion representing 100%.

The VAT row has been worsened by the confiscation of alcoholic beverages by the Hisbah board in some states which pick up the VAT from the drinks destroyed, an issue that has rankled a large section of the polity.
