The Nigeria Football Supporters Club, NFSC, is looking to galvanise support for women football tournaments.

This was disclosed by the President of the Supporters club, Sam Ikpea against the backdrop of the ongoing Aisha Buhari Cup.

Ikpea made the disclosure in an interview in Lagos, revealing that hosting the maiden Aisha Buhari Women’s Invitational Tournament was an eye-opener on how to raise more awareness and support in future tournaments

“I give kudos to the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) and the Local Organising Committee (LOC) of Aisha Buhari Cup for initiating a women competition of this magnitude.

“This is a good development to women football in Nigeria so much that CAF and FIFA did not only endorse the competition, but also they are physically present, this has put us in very good standing.

“We at the NFSC have been playing vital role to ensure adequate support to all our national teams. We went with the team to Germany and present in both local and international matches.

“We will continue to give it our all so that the Super Falcons will not only have our support, but also feel our presence during their matches,” he said.

Ikpea said that though female football does not gather much fans as the male, yet the supporters club would work assiduously to attract more spectators.

“All over the world, watching women football does not attract much fans as the men’s tournament.

“However, with the initiative of NFF to host the Aisha Buhari Cup, this will bring more awareness to the women competitions as we are giving more attention to them.

“As NFSC is concerned, we have our plans for women competitions because this Aisha Buhari Cup has opened our eyes to some areas that is lacking in terms of supportership for female competitions.

“We have noticed our shortcomings and we assure Nigerians that henceforth, not just the supporters club, but more fans will be encouraged to watch women football,” he said.
