Ronaldo Upstages Messi As World Highest Paid Footballer
Manchester United and Portugal forward Cristiano Ronaldo has emerged as the world’s highest-paid footballer, upstaging rival Lionel Messi from top spot according to business magazine Forbes.
Both Ronaldo and Messi made sensational transfer moves this summer, with Ronaldo rejoining Manchester United, 12 years after his exit to Real Madrid, while Messi made a sensational free transfer to PSG
According to Forbes, Ronaldo who has over 500 million social media followers is set to make a pre-tax income of $125m dollars in the 2021-22 season, in addition to the $70m the Portuguese star is set to pocket from salary and bonuses at Man United
The rest will come from endorsements and partnerships with brands which include Nike, Herbalife, Clear and CR7 (a brand which he owns).
Messi, who topped the 2020 Forbes list, will be paid a salary of $75m with an additional $35m from endorsements for total expected earnings of 110 million dollars.
PSG duo of Neymar Junior and Kylian Mbappe follow in third and fourth place respectively. Brazilian superstar Neymar is set to pocket a total earnings of $95m while his PSG teammate Mbappe will pocket $43m.
Liverpool’s Egyptian superstar Mohammed Salah rounds up the top 5 with a total earning of $41m.
