The social media platform Twitter, which is currently banned in Nigeria has said it looks forward to being reinstated in Africa’s most populous country following “productive” discussions with the administration of President Muhammadu Buhari.

Twitter’s statement follows  Buhari’s announcement that the month-long ban on Twitter will be lifted, but only after certain conditions are met.

An unnamed Twitter spokesperson, on Friday, said: “We continue to engage with the Nigerian government and we are committed to charting a path forward to the restoration of Twitter for everyone in Nigeria.

“Discussions with the Nigerian government have been respectful and productive – we look forward to seeing the service restored very soon.”

Recall, Buhari, in his Independence Day speech, said the suspension of the operations of Twitter in Nigeria will only end if certain conditions were met.

These conditions, the president said, include “national security and cohesion, registration of physical presence and representation, fair taxation, dispute resolution, and local content.”

GreenWhiteGreen GWG reports that Twitter was banned in Nigeria last June after the social media platform deleted a post by President Buhari which the organization said violated its policies. The government of Nigeria in a riposte ordered telecommunication companies in Nigeria to close access to Twitter.

However, many Nigerians have been able to slip through the ban by linking on to Virtual Private Networks, VPNs to access Twitter.
