Players called up to play for the World Cup in 2022 will only be released by their clubs one week before the start of the tournament according to a report by French daily L’Equipe.

The 2022 World Cup is hosted by Gulf country Qatar, and due to the high temperatures in the summer, the football fiesta was moved to a cooler period.

A document sent out by UEFA last July to its 55 member associations, seen by L’Équipe, indicated that players will only be available from November 14. With the competition taking place from November 21 to December 18, the final matchday of the domestic leagues will take place on the weekend before the start of the World Cup.

As a result of the tournament being held in autumn, the domestic football calendar will be revamped in order to accommodate the change

French Ligue 1 and 2 authorities are expected to meet in order to discuss solutions.
