Chelsea Hang On Top After Surviving At Brentford
Chelsea remained on top of the English Premier League after surviving a second-half barrage at West London rivals, Brentford. The European champions ran away with a 1-0 victory from Brentford.
Chelsea were the better side in the first half but collapsed in the second half as the newly promoted Brentford dominated possession for most of the second half.
The Chelsea goal at the dot of halftime came from Ben Chilwell who has had three successive strikes at goal for club and country after hits against Southampton and Andorra.
The victory also gives Chelsea coach, Thomas Tuchel the record of being the first London coach to win seven successive London derbies.
Chelsea have their goalkeeper, Edouard Mendy to thank for pushing away several direct hits from the Brentford attack.
Indeed as the referee signaled the end of hostilities Edouard Mendy punched the air, spun around with a scream reflecting his excitement at grabbing the three points that put the club at the top of the league table.
GreenWhiteGreen GWG reports that Mendy made six vital stops on Saturday the best of the lot coming in injury-time from Christian Norgaard’s acrobatic effort that would have given the team a deserved equalizer.
Brentford were undoutbledly unlucky having hit that Chelsea goal post at least three times and played significantly more in the Chelsea area in the second half.
Speaking to Sports Today, Tuchel said “we were very strong for 70 minutes and were very lucky for 20 minutes.”
