Controversy was on Friday dogging moves by associates of Governor Godwin Obaseki to stop Chief Dan Orbih, the national vice-chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP from the forthcoming national convention of the party.

GreenWhiteGreen GWG reports that the controversy flowed from the fact that Orbih was Obaseki’s campaign manager who swept him to re-election last year. The move was upon an application by associates of Governor Obaseki to stop Orbih and some PDP leaders from attending the national convention of the party scheduled for next weekend.

Besides Orbih, the governor’s camp was also seeking to stop the member representing Oredo Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, Mr Omoregie Ogbeide-Ihama, and the State Secretary of the PDP, Mr Hillary Otsu, from the convention.

Political stakeholders in Edo State observed that besides stumping for Obaseki to win re-election, that Orbih was also able to convince Mr. Ogbeide-Ihama who was the leading aspirant for the PDP governorship ticket before the primaries to step down for Obaseki when he joined the PDP after he was disqualified by the All Progressives Congress, APC from seeking re-election on its platform.

Political stakeholders in Edo State were amused that the two men who were central to the governor’s re-election had become targets of the governor’s camp to dominate the polity in Edo State after they were given accommodation by the PDP.

Meanwhile, NAN reports that in the case instituted by Chief Idehen Ekundayo, Mr Stanley Iduoze and Odion Omadimhe, all reported associates of Governor Obaseki, the court also barred eight other PDP chieftains from the national convention.

Meanwhile, the learned Justice Okeaya-Inneh having heard from the claimant’s counsel ruled as follows:

“Having carefully considered the said application, I am of the humble but firm opinion that the Defendants of this Suit be placed on Notice.

“However, because of the salient pressing issues raised in the Process of the Court, I hereby Order Accelerated hearing of the Motion on Notice.

“It is further ordered that the Bailiff of this Court effect service as a matter of Urgency of all processes in this suit on the 1st – 11th Defendants.

“This case is Adjourned to 2nd of November 2021. Hearing notice to be issued/served  on the 1st – 11th Defendants.”

PDP enthusiasts were at the weekend saying that the move by the associates of Governor Obaseki may be ineffective given the fact that substantive hearing in the case will be only after the convention which is scheduled for October 30-31.

The move to stop the PDP leaders from the convention in the wake of the crisis between Governor Obaseki and Orbih has puzzled many in Edo given that it is targetted at those who gave the governor accommodation after his issues in the APC.
