Breaking: Police Quell Plateau Assembly Faceoff, Arrest Speaker, Others

The faceoff in the Plateau State House of Assembly was moving towards a resolution late afternoon on Monday after policemen breached the sanctity of the House of Assembly to arrest Speaker Ayuba Abok and some of the 12 members who took position inside the legislative complex in Jos.

GreenWhiteGreen GWG had earlier reported how Speaker Ayuba Abok and his loyalists entered the assembly complex to hold a plenary session.

The Speaker and his loyalists were escorted by militant youths. Not long after, supporters of the other camp of about eight legislators also came and took position forcing the police to repeatedly shoot into the air. The police also shot several canisters of tear gas into the premises to disperse the two camps.

GreenWhiteGreen GWG had reported how eight legislators last Thursday claimed to have impeached Speaker Ayuba Abok. The camp of eight who are allegedly aligned to Governor Simon Lalong claimed to have also elected a member, Yakubu Sanda as the new Speaker of the House of Assembly.

The impeachment has, however, been condemned by several stakeholders as having failed to have met constitutional requirements.

The faceoff between the two groups paralysed activities in the legislative complex all through Monday.

Shortly before 3.00 p.m. after successfully dispersed the militant youths aligned to the two factions of the House, policemen moved in and picked the legislators. Among those believed to have been picked was Speaker Ayuba Abok.

GreenWhiteGreen GWG was yet to confirm the exact number of legislators on the side of Speaker Ayuba Abok who were arrested with him. However, whether the arrest of Speaker Ayuba Abok would bring the crisis in the Plateau House of Assembly would lead to a resolution of the crisis is another question given the new dimension it opens.
