The Police have shot tear gas into the Plateau House of Assembly complex to stop Speaker Ayuba Abok from presiding over the affairs of the House it emerged on Monday morning.

The move follows the entry into the legislative complex of Speaker Abok early on Monday morning to hold a plenary session of the House.

GreenWhiteGreen GWG had reported that eight members of the Plateau House of Assembly had allegedly removed Speaker Abok from office and in his place ‘elected’ Yakuba Sanda as the new Speaker of the House.

However, Speaker Abok and his supporters in the House of Assembly had contested the claim saying that they were only seven members involved and did not get the two-third majority of the 24 members of the House required to remove a Speaker from office as stipulated by the constitution.

GreenWhiteGreen GWG had reported that Speaker Abok and 11 other members of the House had on Monday morning entered the legislative building set to hold a plenary session of the Plateau House of Assembly.

The lawmakers according to sources were shepherded by youths.

However, it was gathered that not long after that policemen were drafted to the Plateau House of Assembly complex and shot tear gas to disperse the youths who followed the lawmakers to the complex. There were reports that the policemen also shot into the legislative chambers, though that has not been independently confirmed.

Journalists were also affected in the fracas as they and the youths were seen running to avoid the tear gas fumes.

A stakeholder on the plateau said on Monday morning:

“The move is all aimed at stopping Speaker Abok from presiding over the affairs of the House of Assembly as it now appears that we have two Speakers of the Plateau House of Assembly.”

The lawmakers aligned to the factional Speaker, Yakuba Sanda were yet to react to the development.
