Liverpool Eye Knockout Stages, As Atletico Visit Anfield

Liverpool will aim to complete a memorable double over Atletico Madrid when they welcome the La Liga champions to Anfield for Wednesday’s Champions League Group B encounter.

The Reds lead the group by five points ahead of their Spanish opponents in second and FC Porto in third, meaning a win here would render the margin impossible for both Atlético and bottom side AC Milan to make up.

Goals from Mohamed Salah and Naby Keita gave Jürgen Klopp’s an early lead in the reverse fixture two weeks ago, before Antoine Griezmann levelled the score with two of his own. The Frenchman was then sent off before a later penalty from Mohamed Salah secured the win for the away side.

Liverpool come into this fixture looking to bounce back from a deflating 2-2 draw against Brighton where the Reds threw a two-goal lead but will be wary of an Atletico side coming off a comfortable 3-0 win over Real Betis in the Spanish LaLiga. Atletico will be missing the services of Antoine Griezmann who was sent off for a reckless challenge in the reverse fixture in Spain, while Stefan Savic also misses out through suspension.

Speaking ahead of the game, Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp said, “It would be big [to qualify] but we usually don’t have to talk about this as we normally have ‘a final’ in the last match-day. Hopefully, that won’t happen this year. But what kind of achievement it would be, we talk about it after it’s happened. Atleti go for everything.”
