Adesina Counters CAN, Says US Wrongly Listed Nigeria As Violator Of Religious Freedom
Femi Adesina has countered the president of the Christian Association of Nigeria, CAN, Dr. Samson Ayokunle on the removal of Nigeria from the United States watch list of countries engaged in violation of religious freedom.
The presidential spokesman said that Nigeria was wrongly placed on the list by the Donald Trump administration because of lies supposedly spread to US administration officials by Nigerians in America about religious persecution under the Muhammadu Buhari administration.
Adesina spoke on Channels Television programme, Sunrise on Monday, a day after CAN President faulted the basis for the removal of Nigeria from the list.
GreenWhiteGreen GWG reports that Dr. Ayokunle while speaking on the final day of the national convention of the Foursquare Gospel Church on Sunday had said that there was no basis for the removal of Nigeria from the list saying that nothing has changed. According to the CAN president persecution of Christians had rather worsened as the Buhari administration progressed.
However, countering him on the Sunrise programme on Monday, Adesina said the US government was fed with “incorrect positions” by Nigerian citizens residing in America about developments in the country.
“The secretary said putting Nigeria on the watchlist was not based on facts, and you know that Nigerians themselves going to America to feed them with incorrect positions about what is happening in Nigeria. And that was why Nigeria was put on that watchlist,” he said.
“But when America discovered that it was not based on facts, Nigeria was removed. It is a very good development for us.”
