Spotlight On Defence As Chelsea Host Man United

League leaders Chelsea host ninth-placed Man United in a Sunday evening clash, which will see Michael Carrick in charge of his first Premier League game as interim Red Devils boss.

Both teams’ defence will be in the spotlight, as they have both played major roles in their teams’ fortunes and misfortunes.

Chelsea boasts the sturdiest defence in the league, conceding just four goals in 12 appearances, contributing to a strong goal difference of +26, while their rivals Man United have the third joint-worst defence in the league, conceding a heavy 20 goals in 12 appearances, with a negative goal difference of -1.

The Blues also have goalkeeper Edouard Mendy who has been in spectacular form, keeping an astounding seven clean sheets in 11 matches, pulling match-winning saves, with the Senegalese widely touted as the best goalkeeper in the world.

Ironically Chelsea’s defenders have also had the most impact in the attacking end of the field contributing 43.33% of league goals scored by the Blues, with 13 of their 30 being scored by defenders. Ben Chilwell, Reece James and Antonio Rudiger have stood out on the attacking front having 14 goal contributions (Goals and assists) among themselves so far.

On the other hand, Man United’s defence has come in for heavy criticism, with captain Harry Maguire being singled out for below-par performances against Liverpool, Watford and that shambolic display against Leicester City. The England international was also sent off in the 4-1 humiliation at Watford.

With Carrick off to a winning start against Villarreal in the Champions League, morale will be high in the United camp, seeing as the Red Devils are currently on a seven-match unbeaten run against Chelsea, and haven’t lost at Stamford Bridge since 2017.
