Micheal Carrick’s first game as interim manager was a daunting trip to league leaders Chelsea, but by full time, Man United had extended their unbeaten run against Chelsea to eight games courtesy of a 1-1 draw at Stamford Bridge.

Jadon Sancho scored for the second game running while Jorginho atoned for an earlier error to score from the spot to pull Chelsea level.

Speaking after the match, Chelsea boss Tuchel said, “Happy with the performance. I saw huge effort, big intensity. We had so many ball recoveries in the opponent’s half. We put the pressure up high, we controlled the counter-attacks before they started,” he told Sky Sports.

“We were brave and courageous. When they defend deep you need the first goal to gain the confidence to have follow-ups and goals and big chances.

“If you don’t score you always run a bit behind because you feel you are the stronger team, you play in the opponents’ half. We had two or three big chances that we should have used but in general, I am very happy.

“I was a bit surprised, because we had so many ball recoveries, that we did not make it from these ball wins to clearer chances.”

Man United interim boss Micheal Carrick was left to rue his side’s inability to maintain their lead and win all three points.

He said, “I’m disappointed, actually. When you’re in front in a game like this, to have it taken away from you like it was is disappointing,” he said.

“I’m immensely proud of the players, the whole group. The staff and the players all week have been in a difficult situation and we tried to make the best of it – we can’t hide from that.

“But there’s that little bitter feeling. We came here to win the game, we had a plan, we were positive with our mindset and our attitude. We’re a little disappointed, I can’t lie.

“I don’t think it was a penalty, no. I don’t think it was a penalty at all. I don’t know what my opinion counts, for now, to be honest. Obviously, they’ve had a lot of play, shots, David [de Gea] has probably had two saves, which I knew before the game at some point he was going to have to make one or two for us.

Other reactions include Nigerian musician Adekunle Gold, who was left to rue the penalty conceded by his team Man United.
