Former Newscaster and current Chairman of the Nigerians In Diaspora Commission (NIDCOM), Abike Dabiri-Erewa has revealed how the Chief Security Officer (CSO) to the late Gen Sani Abacha, Major Hamza Al-Mustapha saved her from being raped in military detention.

Dabiri made the revelation after being presented with an award at the maiden edition of the National Freedom of Information (FOI) Awards organised by the International Press Centre (IPC) and Media Rights Agenda (MRA), in Abuja.

The NIDCOM chairman charged Nigerian journalists to be fearless in undertaking investigative journalism.

Sharing her experience while still in the journalism practice, Dabiri revealed she was once locked up at a military facility, and would have been raped, but for the timely arrival of Major Mustapha.

She said, “Dare to venture, dare to succeed. I was arrested at a point I was doing investigative journalism, locked up in Apapa in one of the military facilities there. What saved me from being raped was Major Al-Mustapha who happened to come in at that point. So, you cannot afford to be afraid.”
