Excitement, Pride As UK Removes Nigeria Off COVID-19 Red List
There was palpable excitement on social media following the removal of Nigeria from the UK COVID-19 red list on Tuesday.
The UK had earlier placed Nigeria and 10 other countries on the red list following the discovery of the Omicron COVID-19 variant.
But following the community transmission of the Omicron variant in the UK, authorities felt the red list would be ineffective in curbing transmission of the dreaded variant.
The decision to remove Nigeria from the red list was contained in a statement by the UK Health Secretary Sajid Javid
“Now that there is community transmission of Omicron in the UK and Omicron has spread so widely across the world, the travel red list is now less effective in slowing the incursion of Omicron from abroad.
Whilst we will maintain our temporary testing measures for international travel we will be removing all 11 countries from the travel red list effective from 4 am tomorrow morning,” Javid told parliament.
In reaction to the news, some Nigerians took to social media to celebrate, hailing the federal government for threatening to reciprocate travel restrictions to the UK, Canada and others.
