Female Sports Journalist, Chapele-Ugo Breaks 100-Year-Old Urhobo Tradition

One of Nigeria’s leading female sports journalists, Tracy Chapele-Ugo, has become the first Urhobo lady in 100 years to inherit the traditional title of her father. It came after she was conferred with a traditional title of The Okugbe 2 of Udu Kingdom in the Urhobo area of Delta State.

The 34-year-old lady who took to social media to share the news says she has broken a 100-year tradition in Urhobo land.

According to Chapele-Ugo, the title was previously conferred on her father and in over 100 years, the Kings in Urhobo land never gave the chieftaincy title of a deceased chief to any of his daughters, particularly if he had a son.

Chief Chapele-Ugo who has distinguished herself in sports journalism especially in Pidgin English commentary was considered worthy and her father’s Urhobo title was transferred to her by her king in Udu kingdom in Delta state.

GreenWhiteGreen, GWG reports that Chapele-Ugo had also broken the record of becoming the first Pidgin English sports broadcaster.

She tweeted thus:

In almost a 100 years #Urhobo Kings don’t give a Father’s Chieftaincy title to his daughter esp when there are sons. Today my family/People/Elders/Ovie found me worthy. Daddy’s Chieftaincy title has been transferred to me.

Chief Tracy Chapele-Ugo, the new Urboho chief, is popularly known as “Suo The Queen Of Sports” and is generally regarded as one of Africa’s finest female pidgin sports commentators with a specialty in football/ basketball/athletics.
