Former Presidential candidate and activist, Omoyele Sowere has slammed the Nigerian Army authorities for allegedly detaining the female soldier who accepted a marriage proposal from an NYSC corps member at the Yikpata Orientation camp in Kwara.

Sowore decried her arrest as unacceptable and called for justice for the unnamed female soldier.

Sowore made the statement in a series of posts on his official Twitter handle (@YeleSowore) on Sunday, calling for anyone with information on how to reach the female soldier to contact him.

He said, Just came to my attention that the @Nigerian army detained the female soldier in this video for getting a proposal from a youth corps member. What the Army did is totally unacceptable and I would very much love to mobilise for her to get justice.

“Our society is getting more and more oppressive and discriminatory. This has to stop! Please if you have her contact or know how she could be reached, kindly DM me! #Revolutionnow

Some Twitter users joined Sowore to condemn the arrest of the female soldier, while others questioned if her arrest was really because of her engagement to the NYSC corps member.

Here are some reactions gathered by GreenWhiteGreen on the arrest of the female soldier.

@bakare_adewale I think the lady (soldier) has the right to accept the proposal but shouldn’t be in public domain with Army uniform or with the Army uniform but not outside with camera. Army is an organization with it’s unique rules and regulations with culture. I come in peace

@man_like_khris Nigeria has always been anti-happiness.

@chukalito I think that’s gross misconduct in the military.

@Ceejayphillip I think that is out of order, it tells lot that while on duty she was having an affair with a Corp member. And in reality that behaviour does not reflect a positive attitude toward the military rules of engagement. She need to face disciplinary in accordance to the army rules.

@matrumery I think why she was detained was because of the manner at which she displayed her happiness. Military are not allowed to demonstrate excessive joy or happiness in a dictatorship government like that in Asia and Africa

@utibeABASHI Something that is obviously wrong even without being told sef, she must serve ROB and later go and marry that one no concern Army

Also reacting to the alleged detention of the female soldier engaged to the NYSC member:

@rinze92 Girl wey one senior officer go don dey toast since, gather mind collect ring from an ordinary Corper and even gave him a kiss for the whole world to see. And you think she no go collect? The amazing thing is the people on this comment section talking about “gross misconduct” cheww

@MansurAdemola Was she in a battlefield well I don’t see anything wrong with what happened she’s a human being like the corps happiness when you’re in army uniform is against the rules of engagement ??

@popey4real Seriously, she’s above 18 and have the right to accept or reject love proposal, either public or private, the only thing that I can fault is using army uniform but detaining her is the height of it….we need to wake up from oppressive mentality in Nigeria…God bless Nigeria

@Tedhens Is it against the Army code of conduct? Why should it be an offence to publicly express love? Doesn’t she have the fundamental right?

@dmvginger I guess this means a Female Soldier does not deserve or cannot seek for love among civilians or entitled to Happiness. Everything about the formation of all entities in Nigeria is always leaning backwards starting from their Fradulent constitution etc

@LifeTube5 Replying to @SaharaReporters and @HQNigerianArmyEven if she is an army officer she also have her rights to live a life, was she suppose to reject a marriage proposal because she is an army officer? what the Nigeria army did is very wrong, I see people talking about gross misconduct, that is foolishness. #ARMYAREHUMANS

@Godycreative The army is a discipline setting. She has a right to accept even a toddler for marriage. But hey, not with army uniform and in public? No. That is gross indiscipline.

@Ozili12 Accepting a marriage proposal in public may be a violation of military policy, but failure to protect the country from Boko insurgents and terrorists also is. Why not first arrest all commanders for publicly violating public trust since 2006, and then get to the lady later.
