It was a gathering of eggheads in the academia and the banking sectors last Saturday when Professor Ralph Adeghe, Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Igbinedion University, Benin, and Mrs. Osaretin Demuren, former chairman of the board of directors of Guaranty Trust Bank, were honoured for their attainments in their fields of endeavour.

The honour to the duo was made at a luncheon organized by ED-JOHN School of Management, Lagos.

Those who spoke at the gathering extolled the professional achievements of the recipients who they said were deserving of the recognition given by ED-JOHN School of Management.

Among the eminent Nigerians who attended the occasion were Professor Eghosa Osaghae, former Vice-Chancellor, Igbinedion University, Dr. Iyi Uwadiae former Registrar, West African Examination Council, WAEC and Dr. Osaren Emokpae, Chairman, Board of Trustees, ED-JOHN School of Management.

Dr. Emokpae set the ball rolling when he explained that the choice of Professor Adeghe and Mrs. Demuren for recognition was not misplaced on the claim that the two respectively represent excellence in academia and banking.

Emokpae described Adeghe who he said he has known for over 30 years as a man who worked very hard to get to his present position. He as such expressed no doubt in the ability of Adeghe who was recently elevated to the position of DVC, Igbinedion University to climb more steps from the present position.

On the establishment of ED-JOHN School of Management, Emokpae stressed that the idea emanated from the decision to bridge the gap between theoretical and practical learning in Nigeria.

According to him, “I have been to Universities in Nigeria as student and lecturer and I know that what students are taught in the classroom is quite different from the practical aspects of the study. That gap is what ED-JOHN School of Management is set to bridge.”

In his acceptance speech, Professor Adeghe who described the occasion as his day of glory commended the management of the school for recognizing what he described as his ‘little achievement’ with the award.

“I didn’t know that my contribution to the growth of education would attract recognition by ED-JOHN School of Management in this form. With this award of recognition I am spurred to contribute more to society,” the Deputy Vice Chancellor of the nation’s first private university said.

On her part, Mrs. Demuren who was recognized for her meritorious service in the banking industry where she rose to be chairman of the former GTBank, said she was humbled by the school’s recognition.  She promised to give her best to the betterment of society despite retirement as board chairman of one of the fastest growing banks in the country.

Before her appointment as chairman of GTBank, Mrs. Demuren had served for 33 years in the Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN where she held several significant roles in the Research, Exchange Control and Trade & Exchange Departments.

In 1999, she made history as the first female to be appointed a Departmental Director of the CBN as the Director of Trade & Exchange.

The ED-JOHN  School of Management formerly known as Philip Business School (PBS) was founded in 1997 by Osarenren Philips Emokpae, PhD. DBA and his wife Mrs. Imose Enoma Osar – Emokpae, an alumnus of the University of Lagos, Benin and Oxford University, United Kingdom.
