Romance In Nigerian Army: Reactions On Treatment Of Male, Female Soldiers

The Nigerian Army has come under scrutiny from the public following the release of pictures of male soldiers who carried out marriage proposals in the public without being sanctioned by the authorities.

This is coming on the heels of the confirmation of the arrest of the female soldier who accepted a marriage proposal from a NYSC corps member at the Yipkata Orientation Camp in Kwara State.

Army spokesman Brigadier-General Onyeama Nwachukwu said the female soldier’s action amounted to taking advantage of her trainee, noting that the public would have been outraged and accused the Army of coercion had a male soldier proposed to a female corper during NYSC parade.

He said, “The female soldier in question violated the following rules of the NA:

“1. Fraternization while on official duty at the NYSC camp. That is, indulging in an amorous relationship with a trainee.

“2. A personnel must have served for three years before he/she can qualify for marriage.

“3. She disobeyed the Armed Forces of Nigeria standing guidelines and directives for the use of Social Media.

“4. Indulging in romance while in uniform.

“5. Her conduct was prejudicial to good order and military discipline.

“All the above, if proven are in violation of extant laws with attendant disciplinary and penal implications.”

The pictures of the male soldiers were dug out by a Twitter user @OnyedikaAnambra, who queried why the male soldiers were not sanctioned and slammed feminists for not taking up the matter of the arrested female soldier.

His tweet reads, “None of these men were detained. Why detain the female soldier that was proposed to, by the Corper boyfriend? This is where I expected feminists to speak up against inequality, but you won’t see them. They are more concerned about eating gizzard and who cooks for the family”

In response to the tweet, some social users tried to explain that the male soldiers were not involved with their subordinates while on duty, others still felt arresting the female Nigerian soldier was wrong.

Following the response of the army stating the rules the soldier violated, these users removed sentiments, and backed the authorities, saying the detention of the female soldier was in order

Dayola No the same thing The corp members were in their care So she having sex with him was a conflict of I interest

Chibuzor Jamie A little difference guys. The uniform is not d main issue here. I guess being on duty and on uniform and having this same proposal are the reasons she’s being penalized. Like a dog eating a bone hung around its neck. I’m not in support though

Olounjueda Read well to know if she fulfilled those conditions, she was on duty at nysc camp, she could have done it later, you guys should learn to think. All you men that kneel to propose to women, I wonder what has come over many men of this generation.

AIM There is no double standard in this. The Male Soldiers proposing in uniform is a different scenario. The female soldier is not being indicted for being proposed to in uniform but allowing such to happen with a corper she was suppose to train. By UN standard as a Military or Police on peace mission u cannot marry a local of that country u are on peace mission.

These users were more interested in slamming feminists who were called out in the tweet

@AfamDeluxo They won’t speak up when it matter. They are only interested in tearing male celebs down and looking for ancestral lands to thief. Meanwhile, lots of female kids are constantly being used as slaves all over Nigeria and none of them want to champion it.

@regiemie Lol speak up ke, We don’t have feminists in Nigeria, We only have husband beaters, frustrated Hypocrites parading themselves as feminists

@David_Ekpo_ LOL We don’t have feminists in Nigeria, just bittered ladies who want things to go their way

These other users still sympathised with the female Nigerian soldier over the arrest

@adugho That is the problem we have in Africa, women are been treated fairly. Women have a right to express their feelings too, irrespective of the place they are working.

@williams_sabifa I still can’t believe the Nigerian Army can go so low and be so old schooled to detain the female soldier. The military of most countries is not only about discipline, bravery or commitment, it’s also about humanity and love.

@Maxie1_ This is for people saying she was on uniform when she was proposed to. Why aren’t these guys detained?

@nnekei As a female uniformed personnel in Nigeria you need direct approval from the army, police etc before you can get pregnant if you are married. But the men don’t need same to impregnate their partners. There is your answer.
