Four Key Facts As Chelsea Defeat Tottenham 2-0 In Carabao Cup Semis

Chelsea were the euphoric side after defeating Tottenham Hotspur 2-0 at Stamford Bridge in the first leg of the Carabao Cup semifinals.

The victory meant they now have one foot in the final with another ninety minutes left to play away from their home turf against Antonio Conte’s wounded lions.

Be that as it may, these are four key facts from last night’s frantic tie which Antonio Conte fell short against his former employers:

1. This was the eighth different League Cup tie between Chelsea and Tottenham, and fourth to take place in the semi-finals of the Carabao Cup competition. No sides have met in the final four of the League Cup more often.

2. Since winning three games in a row against Chelsea between 2018 and 2019, Tottenham were winless in their last eight against the Blues in all competitions heading into last night’s game.

3. Kai Havertz has now scored five goals in three League Cup appearances for Chelsea, just one goal fewer than he’s scored in 42 Premier League games for the Blues (6).

4. Twenty nine of the thirty sides to win the first leg of a two-legged League Cup semi-final tie by 2+ goals have gone on to progress to the final, with the only exception being Tranmere (vs Aston Villa) in 1994.

How Chelsea Won

GreenWhiteGreen GWG reports that Thomas Tuchel, seemingly eager to put recent indiscretions to one side after an apology, reinstated Romelu Lukaku to his starting XI, though Chelsea’s 2-0 victory arguably said more about Spurs’ defence than the hosts’ attack.

The Blues were ahead inside five minutes as Kai Havertz punished a Japhet Tanganga error at the back, and a comical Ben Davies own goal had Chelsea cruising at the interval.

Spurs improved somewhat in the second 45 minutes but were fortunate not to concede more goals, with Timo Werner spurning a couple of excellent opportunities, perhaps giving Conte’s men a lifeline for the return leg
