Five Players Who Can Solve Manchester United’s Midfield Dilemma
By Eze Dike
Manchester United, giants of English football have been on a rough patch in recent years and the club’s present distress has been linked to a dilemma in the midfield.
Indeed, since 2014 when Sir Alex Ferguson departed Old Trafford the team have struggled and sit currently in 7th place, and risk losing a spot in the Champions league next season. After series of disappointing performances both on home turf and away, United decided to part ways with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer in November, following a discouraging 4-1 loss to relegation threatened Watford. United legend then turned manager, Ole was falling out with the fans and the board had to show him the way out.
Recent incomings at the start of the season such as 5 time Ballon d’Or winner and a United legend himself, Cristiano Ronaldo and further additions in Raphael Varane and English wonder kid Jadon Sancho, United fans were expecting their team to challenge on all fronts this season. That has not seemed to be the case as United were knocked out in the first round of the Carabao cup and have Ronaldo to thank for passing through the group stage of the Champions league as he has helped fire the team to the top of their group.
The Red Devils appointed Former Leipzig Coach Ralf Ragnick, who received high praise from Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp and Chelsea’s Thomas Tuchel, who claimed Ragnick taught them the basics of coaching and built the foundation of their style of play. All has not been rosy though for the German in the Premier League has united have been criticised for their erratic performances. This Criticism has been centred around creativity with several pundits stating that Manchester United lack stability and coordination in the midfield creating a dilemma in the middle of the pack. This Manchester United dilemma was very apparent in their most recent 0-1 loss to Wolves at Old Trafford. That indeed was the first time Wolves would defeat Manchester United at Old Trafford since 1980.
United have been linked with a few number of midfielders in recent months but have failed to secure the signature of any. Here, we look at five players who can be key to solving the Manchester United dilemma in the midfield.
• Boubacar Kamara: Marseille’s wonder kid has been on the lips of everyone with his commanding presence in midfield characterised by quick feet, aggressive last ditch challenges and calmness under pressure. Despite being only 22 years of age, Kamara is one of the hottest prospects in France now. The French man has been nicknamed the “Technical Destroyer” by Olympique de Marseille fans who cherish the young man dearly. The Marseille academy graduate will play a vital role in helping United get back to their glory days
• Frank Kessié: The Ivorian who is currently a free agent is on the radar of several European giants after AC Milan failed to renew his contract before the transfer window began.
