Mason Mount @23: Chelsea’s Golden Boy

Young, talented and fast, Mason Mount is fast becoming a Chelsea legend. Indeed, the Englishman has written himself into the history books of Chelsea and established himself as a fan’s favourite.
Mason Tony Mount was born in Portsmouth, England and at the tender age of just six, he joined Chelsea. He had always been a standout in his younger days, possessed special ability, which had been evident every time he stepped on a pitch.
In his teenage years, it would become clear that he’d have a career in football, with a number of teams impressed by his performances as a 14-year-old. But surrounded by quality players around him, question marks arose about his future at the club.
It had been a long time since a player came through the academy ranks at the club and gone into the first team as a teenager, with Chelsea looking to send players on loan until their 20’s, before eventually making a decision on them.
Determined as ever, Mount chose to stay at Chelsea and in the 2016-2017 season, he was named Chelsea academy player of the year after a talismanic performance in the club’s U18 league winning team. Mount then went on loan to Dutch outfit Vitesse where he would go on to impress, scoring 13 goals, including one hat-trick, and recording 9 assists. At just the age of 19, he was named Vitesse’s player of the year.
After impressing in Vitesse, Mount caught the attention of a number of teams in Europe as well as his parent club, Chelsea. Mount joined Derby County on a season-long loan. A defining year for him that would see him lead Frank Lampard’s side to the play-offs, where they eventually fell short to Aston Villa.
Finally, he found his way into the Chelsea first team as his transition into the squad was seamless when Lampard joined him in Chelsea from Derby as manager.
Mount became an instant success. His first season was more than impressive as fans started to fall in love with the young man and tipped him to become the next club Great following in the footsteps of John Terry and Frank Lampard.
Even after Chelsea appointed Thomas Tuchel in January, 2021 in the place of Lampard, Mount continued to be an integral part of the team that went on to reach the FA Cup final, win the UEFA Champions League and also the UEFA Super Cup.
His pivotal role in scoring in the semi-final of the Champions League against European giants Real Madrid and his assist in the winning goal in Porto against Manchester City were part of his distinguishing marks in the last year.
Mount also got recognition for his hard work and brilliance as he was named in the 30-man list for the 2021 Ballon d’Or and was named in the Champions League team of the season.
Internationally, Mount will go on to be a regular in England’s Euro 2020 side, and was part of the team that lost to Italy on penalties. At just the age of 23, he has truly asserted himself as one of the best young footballers around the world.
On the occasion of his 23rd birthday, Mason Mount is celebrated as a hard working, productive and progressive player who has achieved loads in his early years and still has plenty room to rise to a football legend.
