Governor Godwin Emefiele’s imminent transition from the secret precincts of banking to the cut-throat arena of political devourers formally commenced in Lagos on Saturday, as hundreds of his political supporters shouted on him to enter the 2023 presidential race.

The supporters cutting across a coalition under the aegis of The Green Alliance, TGA said that there was no better person in the political arena best positioned to succeed President Muhammadu Buhari.

Emefiele, from Agbor, Delta State, the supporters said, would also be the answer to the cry of marginalization by the Igbo in the country.

Emefiele was not present at the ceremony but the supporters who cut across various segments of society and the country were confident that he would be persuaded to enter the race.

The supporters of Emefiele turned out in T-Shirts embedded with the picture of the CBN governor in front and what may be his moniker, MEFFY 2023.

The convener of TAG, Wale Fapohunda, (no connection to the Ekiti State Attorney General) in his address largely directed to the national media that was well represented, said that the call on Emefiele to run arose from what he described as his hands-on approach in managing the Central Bank.

According to him it was remarkable that even if he were appointed by a Peoples Democratic Party, PDP administration, that the succeeding All Progressives Congress, APC government not only found him fit enough but also went on to make him the first CBN governor in the Fourth Republic to win a second term.

However, before his CBN advent, Fapohunda also observed Emefiele’s successes at Zenith Bank, noting that the bank under him achieved a hundred billion naira after tax profit under his management in 2012.

“Since he was appointed the governor of the CBN he has spent his energy in building a resilient financial system that can serve the growth and development needs of the Nigerian economy,” Fapohunda said.

“A typical example of this was seen during his first term, he supervised an interventionist currency policy at the behest of the presidency, propping up the Nigerian Naira by pumping billions of dollars into the foreign exchange market. He also introduced a multiple exchange rate regime to try to mask pressure on the Naira and avoid a series of devaluations.”

He dismissed criticism from certain quarters that Dr. Emefiele had deviated from the core role of sustaining monetary policy saying that the development functions of the CBN as espoused by the CBN governor were well covered by the new CBN Act of 2007.

“He has not declared, we are saying we want a round peg in a round hole. We have looked at all the aspirants, those who have declared and who are about to declare that the facts speak for itself.”

Fapouhnda said that he believed that Emefiele would respond to the call to enter the 2023 contest given his love for Nigeria and if not, he would be compelled to do so.

He also dismissed insinuations from newsmen that Emefiele lacks a political structure pointing out that he would be relying on God to make him president in 2023.

Also speaking, Angela Ajiofor leader of Asaba Women Association of Nigeria said women groups were ready to back Emefiele including a group she identified as Women in Politics.

Barrister Akin Osomo speaking on behalf of the Youth Alliance for Good Governance said the group believed that a technocrat was best suited to guide the country in the next dispensation and that there was no person better than Emefiele.

While noting that Dr. Emefiele is a completely detrabilised man, he added “His achievements are numerous in the CBN. He is a man that has been ordained for this time.”
