Update: ASUU Takes Decision On Indefinite Strike On Monday

There was confusion late on Sunday over reports that the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU had declared an indefinite strike from Monday, February 14, 2022. The confusion arose after a tweet quoting the ASUU president, Professor Emmanuel Osodeke as declaring the indefinite strike, following a meeting of the National Executive Committee, NEC of the body in Lagos.

It has now been reported that the tweet was not authorized by Osodeke.

GreenWhiteGreen GWG, however, reports that at the end of the meeting on Sunday, that the majority of the NEC members were said to have voted along for the strike.

Following that meeting, another meeting was said to have commenced at about 12.00 a.m. where a final decision on the strike would be taken.

The ASUU president is expected to address the press after the meeting on Monday on whether or not the union would embark on an indefinite strike as had been imputed.

GreenWhiteGreen GWG reports that there had been repeated pressure from ASUU to the government over the failure of the administration to honour the 2009 agreements reached with the union.

It would be recalled that the body called off a months-long strike last year following the agreement to honour the agreement. However, the administration continued to procrastinate forcing the union to on November 15, 2021 give the Federal Government a three-week deadline to honour the agreement.

However, three months after that deadline, the administration had yet to buckle. The decision of the NEC of ASUU to again proceed or not on an indefinite strike in all government-owned universities would be made later known on Monday, February 14, 2022.
