Maintain Women Quota In Rescue Plan For Nigeria, Kabiru Urges PDP

Peoples Democratic Party, PDP chieftain, Mohammad Kabiru has called on the national leadership of the party to ensure that the special provisions meant to boost women participation in governance and politics are observed to the letter.

Kabiru in a statement made available to  GreenWhiteGreen GWG specifically called on the PDP leadership to ensure that at least 35% of nomination tickets are reserved for women.

According to him doing so would be in line with Section 6(5) of the PDP’s Constitution which according to him expressly states that; “The Party shall support the emancipation and participation of women by encouraging their representation at all levels.”

According to him Section 6(7) was even more emphatic on the special privileges for Women saying it provides that “In nomination for Party offices, not less than 35% shall be reserved for women”.  While this constitutional provisions is naturally expected to be binding on the party and implemented in all elections, the reality is not the case in practice.  Women of the Party are still underrepresented in political offices, and the Constitutional mandatory 35% is yet to be implemented.

Noting the underrepresentation of women in governance and politics, Kabiru said that though the female population constitute a significant proportion of the voting population, he said that they are, however, underrepresented in government and political appointments due to the intricacies and political climate during appointments.

Kabiru thus called on the Dr. Iyorcha Ayu led PDP National Working Committee, NWC to ahead of its plans to rescue and rebuild Nigeria ahead of 2023, that it ensures full compliance with the strict implementation of the mandatory 35% representation of women across board.
