Paris Saint Germain, PSG claimed a 1-0 victory over 13-time Champions League winners Real Madrid in the Round of 16 but its iconic player, Lionel Messi left with a new negative record. An inspired Kylian Mbappe performance secured a first leg victory for the French giants as he capped off his talismanic display with a 90th minute winner to sink the Galacticos.

The Parisians are favourites to win the Champions League this season, and with their promising front three of Kylian Mbappe, Neymar and Lionel Messi, they will be looking to claim their first ever European crown after recent disappointments reaching the semi final last year and the final in 2020, losing to Bayern Munich.

Despite PSG’s win on the night, 7-time Ballon d’Or winner Lionel Messi was on the receiving end of intense criticism following his poor showing on the night and his mediocre performance since his move to the French giants in the summer of 2021.

The Argentine missed a spot kick against Real Madrid after Kylian Mbappe was fouled in the box and failed to give his team the lead. That miss meant that no player has missed more penalties in Champions League history than Lionel Messi.

He matched Thierry Henry’s total of five misses as Thibaut Courtois kept his effort out. L’Equipe piled the misery on the 2021 Ballon d’Or winner as they rated the forward 3/10 against Real Madrid. Messi has had a difficult time since his move to the French capital scoring seven goals in 21 appearances in all competitions this season.

In November 2021, Ex Barcelona teammate Luis Suarez revealed that the Argentine opened up to him about his struggles since joining PSG, stating that he has had problems with the weather and is finding it difficult to settle in.

The second highest goalscorer in Champions League history with 125 goals, a 5-time Champions League winner and a born winner throughout his football career, the whole footballing world for sure backs Lionel Messi to get back to his glittering best and help PSG win their first ever Champions League crown over this negative record.
