APC Convention: New Permutations As Buhari Shows His Hand

New permutations on the presidential and party positions at stake in the All Progressives Congress, APC, were being projected on Tuesday after the party’s governors and President Muhammadu Buhari resolved to swap party positions between the North and the South at the party’s forthcoming convention.

In a major indication of Buhari’s will to stamp his authority on the party, the president directed the stakeholders to explore the option of consensus in filling the position of national chairman.

GreenWhiteGreen GWG reports that the party’s 2023 presidential aspirants have been alleged to be pushing some of the national chairmanship aspirants as a way of having projecting their aspirations.

The president’s directive on a consensus it is alleged opens the way for him to project a candidate that would be accepted by consensus.

19 governors, Vice President Yemi Osinbajo; Secretary to Government of the Federation (SGF), Boss Mustapha and the Chief of Staff to the President, Prof. Ibrahim Gambari were present at the meeting which took place at the Presidential Villa.

Governor Nasir El-Rufai who briefed newsmen at the end of the meeting said that contrary to reports in the media of division among the APC governors, he said that the governors had reached an agreement on zoning.

He said: “We have agreed a zoning formula for all the six geo-political zones.

“Essentially, northern zone will have the positions the south have had in the last eight years. And vice versa.

“It is a very simple, equitable and fair formula.

“We will now go back and consult at the zonal level and look at the positions that are available and the process of the convention preparation we started in earnest.

“So, by the grace of God, on the 26th of March, we would have done our national convention,” he said of the resolution of the APC governors in their meeting with President Buhari.

The Kaduna State governor also said, “We are committed to ensure that the Peoples Destruction Party doesn’t come back to power.”

Eighteen of the governors that were in attendance at the meeting are those of Yobe, Ekiti, Ebonyi, Jigawa, Cross River, Kaduna, Lagos, Borno, Niger, Gombe, Osun, Kebbi, Anambra dep, Nasarawa, Kwara, Kano, Imo, Kogi, Ogun, and Plateau states.

The outgoing deputy governor of Anambra state was also in attendance.

It was the governors of Ondo, Katsina and Zamfara that were not present during the briefing.
