Anxiety As PRP Sets To Shock PDP, APC In Jos North/Bassa By-Election

The Peoples Redemption Party, PRP is set to reap a political windfall on the Plateau as the by-election into the politically sensitive Jos North/Bassa Federal Constituency turns into a battle of the two major religions in the state.

GreenWhiteGreen GWG reports that in a departure from recent developments that the two dominant parties in the state, the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP and All Progressives Congress, APC nominated two Christians as their candidates for the by-election.

The PDP nominated Musa Agah while the APC nominated Mr. Abe Aku, a former commissioner in the Governor Simon Lalong cabinet as its candidate for the election.

GreenWhiteGreen GWG reports that the nomination of Mr. Aku by the APC came with muttering in some circles within the party as it was alleged that he was favoured by the governor for the APC ticket. His main rival, Sulieman Yahaya-Kwande who was a former occupant of the seat petitioned the national secretariat  alleging that he won the primary election conducted on February 2, 2022 with 345 votes to the 344 scored by Aku. He claimed that the 345 credited to him was despite the cancellation of four of his votes that would have given him 349 votes.

Kwande had boycotted the rerun election held on February 4 giving way for Aku to emerge. The development meant that the two major parties in the state fielded Christians in a seat that a Christian has not held since 2003.

GreenWhiteGreen GWG reports that the only time a Christian held the seat was between 1999 and 2003 when the likeable Hon Lumumba Adeh occupied the seat on the ticket of the PDP.

Meanwhile, the well organized Muslim community in Jos North/Bassa have focused on the candidate of the PRP, Mohammed Alkali to sustain the Muslim hold on the seat. Though Christians and Muslims are about equally represented in the federal constituency, the high organisaiton and political consciousness of the Muslim community has projected the PRP candidate as the frontline candidate in the election.

Meanwhile, on Friday leaders of the PDP and the APC on the plateau were mobilizing ahead of an election that is largely expected to be a referendum on the outgoing governor of the state, Mr. Lalong.
