Breaking: FIFA, UEFA Ban Russia From All Football Activities
FIFA and UEFA have announced a ban on football teams from Russia indefinitely from international football in the wake of the country’s invasion of Ukraine the two football bodies announced late on Monday.
The decision to lock out Russia from international football was taken on Monday by the Bureau of FIFA Council and the Executive Committee of UEFA and it followed the initial decisions adopted by the bodies to sanction Russia for the invasion of neighbour, Ukraine.
Announcing the decision to sanction Russia for the invasion of Ukraine on its website, FIFA said:
“Following the initial decisions adopted by the FIFA Council and the UEFA Executive Committee, which decisions envisaged the adoption of additional measures, FIFA and UEFA have today decided together that all Russian teams, whether national representative teams or club teams, shall be suspended from participation in both FIFA and UEFA competitions until further notice.
“These decisions were adopted today by the Bureau of the FIFA Council and the Executive Committee of UEFA, respectively the highest decision-making bodies of both institutions on such urgent matters.
“Football is fully united here and in full solidarity with all the people affected in Ukraine. Both Presidents hope that the situation in Ukraine will improve significantly and rapidly so that football can again be a vector for unity and peace amongst people,” the statement announcing the ban of Russia from all FIFA and UEFA sanctioned tournaments announced.
It would be recalled that FIFA had earlier slapped a ban on Russian teams from playing matches within Russia and the use of the country’s flag and anthem.
