Bayern Munich stormed into the quarterfinals of the UEFA Champions League after a 7-1 demolition of Salzburg at the Allianz Arena, with Robert Lewandowski breaking records on different fronts.

Aiming to be the first Austrian side to reach the quarterfinals of Europe’s premier club competition in 37 years, Salzburg were up with an uphill task up against 6-time Champions League winners Bayern Munich.

The German giants took an early lead through their marksman Robert Lewandowski from the penalty spot, and the Poland captain followed that up with two quick fire goals to complete his treble inside just 23 minutes as he created a Champions League record scoring the earliest hat-trick in the competition’s history.

He went on to create further history as he also became the all-time leading scorer for Bayern Munich in Europe with 68 goals, surpassing Gerd Muller who finished with 66 goals.

The 2021 FIFA Best Men’s Player of the Year proved his class once more on the big stage as he helped Bayern to an emphatic 7-1 mauling of Red Bull Salzburg to become the first team to book a quarterfinal spot in this year’s Champions League.

His three goals on the night see him leapfrog Sebastien Haller as the competition’s highest goalscorer with 12 goals. Lewandowski has also hit the 40-goal mark for the seventh consecutive season, breaking records as he continues to challenge for the Ballon d’Or after coming up short to Lionel Messi last year.

Seven wins and a draw from their last eight Champions League outings this term is a menacing run, as Bayern search for a seventh European crown in their illustrious history.
