Napoli’s Nigerian striker Victor Osimhen ensured that they remained firmly in the Serie A title race after helping his side overcome Hellas Verona with a brace in a dogged contest on Sunday evening. The Partenopei have now accumulated 34 points on the road this season, which is more than any other side in the Italy’s top flight.

The visitors entered the contest in a downbeat mood after losing 1-0 to title rivals Milan last weekend and knowing they could ill afford any more slip-ups, they took the lead early on courtesy of Victor Osimhen’s eighth league goal of the season which helped Napoli overcome Verona.

Matteo Politano’s precise delivery from the right found the striker who headed powerfully past the keeper. Osimhen’s opener settled the nerves for Napoli and with momentum in their favour, the visitors pushed for a second goal as they constantly threatened the opponent’s goal.

Verona failed to register a shot on target in the first half after an underwhelming performance saw the visitors head into the tunnel a goal ahead. Only Sassuolo have scored more league goals than Verona in 2022 but the hosts struggled once more following the restart.

The encounter remained finely poised going into the final 20 minutes, but that quickly changed when Osimhen struck for the second time after receiving a cut-back from Giovanni Di Lorenzo.

Despite a late goal from Verona, Napoli held on to secure an important 2-1 win thanks to their brilliant marksman Victor Osimhen who was the architect of their success.

The Nigeria  international has now scored nine league goals and a total of 13 goals across all competitions this season. And the brace from Osimhen against Verona sees Napoli reinstate their chase for the Serie A crown as they sit in 2nd postion just three points behind Milan.
